Kieran Trippier is to leave Newcastle when his contract ends this summer, heightening the sense of an era ending at the Saudi-owned club.

Trippier’s arrival, for £12m, from Atletico Madrid in January 2022 proved a landmark moment in the team’s transformation following Newcastle’s Saudi Arabian-led takeover in October 2021. He has made more than 150 appearances for Newcastle, scoring four goals, and was a part of the Carabao Cup-winning team that beat Liverpool at Wembley last May.

Eddie Howe’s squad is set for a summer overhaul at a time when there is doubt that the manager will reach his five-year anniversary at St James’ Park this November.

While it remains to be seen whether other key players such as Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon will be sold during what is expected to be a busy close season, Trippier’s departure has been long expected.

At 35, the former England full-back, is no longer guaranteed a starting place but a player who has had a vital role in Newcastle’s revival over the past four years. remains a key off field influence.

“It’s emotional and I’m really going to miss it,” said Trippier in a joint statement issued with Newcastle. “It’s been an amazing journey.”

The full back was Howe’s first signing at St James’ Park and helped lead the team to last season’s Carabao Cup triumph in addition to twice qualifying for the Champions League. “While we’ll be saying goodbye to Kieran shortly, we also know we have a lot left to play for this season, and I know a player of Kieran’s character will be giving absolutely everything to end his time here on a high,” Howe said.
